Alternative indie artist, Chezile, performed at Brighton Music Hall, November 3, marking his first-ever concert in Boston and the halfway mark through his Wish You Were Here Tour Pt. 2. The singer-songwriter from Albuquerque, New Mexico, lived in Boston for a brief period. Chezile was accompanied by guitarist Michael Court, drummer Cory James, and bassist Eian McNeely, his brother.
Chezile’s most recent EP, Alē, features eight songs and was released in May 2025. Alē, his childhood nickname, represents the transformation from past to present and shows just how far the young artist has come. It’s an homage that highlights the initial struggles of his career, going from living in his car to signing with record labels.
Before performing, Alex Banin, an indie R&B artist from Los Angeles, opened the night for the crowd by lighting a few candles to set the mood. When asked about the significance of these candles, she said, “As I perform more, I want something visual to set the stage for what to expect… I think it just sets the mood for what you’re about to experience.”
As Banin moved through her slower songs, such as “From a Different Life, It Seems,” the audience became relaxed, swaying side to side as a collective body. However, later in the night, she did not steer away from her upbeat and more groovy songs. Her song, “Comfortable,” had the audience bopping their heads up and down while pumping their arms in the air. Banin also took a moment to play “Ivy,” by Frank Ocean, as it is one of her favorite songs.
One thing to know about Banin is that she loves to interact with her fans. For example, two people in the crowd messaged her on Instagram a couple of nights before, asking her to play her 2020 single “About April.” She was delighted to get the request and performed it live for the whole crowd. Banin ended her setlist by letting everyone know she would love to meet people after the concert by the merch stand.
After a short twenty-minute wait, Chezile came onstage, opening with hit songs like “Still in Love” and “Loveisheroin” that had the audience singing their hearts out. But after the first few songs, Chezile took a moment to tell his fans that this was not going to be a structured concert.
He proceeded to ask the crowd what songs they wanted to hear the most. He simply wanted the fans to provide the input so everyone would have a good time. He maintained a sense of intimacy with the crowd by asking light operators to direct the lights outwards so he could see actual faces and talk with fans throughout. Like Banin, he too wanted to meet as many people as possible after the show was over.
Naturally, when asked about his favorite part of being a musical artist, he said, “Getting to meet people like you and the music connecting with people like you. It’s a gift.”
Most fans shouted requests like “Hotel” or “Beanie,” but some wanted to know what Chezile’s favorite song to play was. His face lit up as he began to play his new song, “Asymptomatic.” The crowd grew quiet in awe as his voice captivated the room, every line filled with emotion.
During the concert, fans were also given a sneak peek at Chelize’s unreleased song “Delay,” which did not disappoint. The song has since been released, racking up 27,000 views in the first five days.
The night ended with him finally playing his hit song, “Beanie,” that gained immense popularity overnight in 2023 through social media. He amassed 1.6 million monthly listeners in under two months following the hit single, changing his life entirely. As the crowd sang the lyrics, Chezile tried to give the microphone to as many people within reaching distance, creating a sea of nothing but smiles.
From living out of his car to going on tour, Chezile’s career is just getting started and is proof that if you love something, don’t ever stop chasing it.
